Job summary

Florida State University’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory seeks a Technical Research Designer, Level I, for the Control Room in Tallahassee. You will operate and maintain DC high magnetic field facility systems and support researchers, engineers and technicians in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

This full-time position requires on-call duties, adherence to safety policies, and hands-on work with the NHMFL Distributed Control System (DCS).

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/equivalent and four years of experience. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and safely operate facility equipment and systems.
  • Coordinate with the City of Tallahassee’s Electrical Distribution Control Room regarding facility operations and power levels.
  • Take corrective actions in response to alarms or abnormal equipment operation.
  • Participate in on-call duties.
  • Perform DCS engineering functions: graphics, trend groups, control logic development and troubleshooting, field device integration.
  • Troubleshoot between the DCS and field devices.
  • Coordinate, prepare and issue Lock, Tag, Verify procedures for maintenance per NHMFL safety policies.
  • Take a proactive attitude toward safety and contribute to NHMFL safety program.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance programs and tracking of water-cooled magnets.
  • Contribute to equipment and system characterization, repairs, maintenance, installation, integration and commissioning.
  • Provide training on safe magnet operations and crane operations as necessary.
  • Assist with design/operation changes to improve reliability; contribute to facility projects and give tours.
