Job summary

Florida State University’s NHMFL seeks a Research Engineer, Level II-VI, to lead the MagLab prototype machine shop in Tallahassee. You will supervise machinists, coordinate CNC programming, and collaborate with designers, engineers, and researchers to deliver high-precision mechanical components for cutting-edge scientific instruments.

You’ll drive safety, set fabrication standards, manage workloads, and mentor staff while translating complex designs into manufacturable parts for NHMFL projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience, or equivalent with seven years.
  • Experience leading machinists and fabrication teams.
  • Strong knowledge of safety standards and quality control.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate all machining and prototype fabrication activities with precision and safety.
  • Oversee daily operations, equipment, workflows, scheduling, and resources.
  • Mentor machinists and ensure adherence to NHMFL safety directives and standards.
  • Collaborate with designers, researchers, and engineers to interpret design intent.
  • Manage budgets, shop queues, and procurement to support high-value prototypes.
