Job summary

Florida State University’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory seeks a Technical Research Designer, Level I, for the Control Room in Tallahassee. You will operate and maintain DC high magnetic field facility systems and support researchers, engineers and technicians in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

This full-time position requires on-call duties, adherence to safety policies, and hands-on work with the NHMFL Distributed Control System (DCS).

Qualifications

• High school diploma/equivalent and four years of experience. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)

Responsibilities

• Monitor and safely operate facility equipment and systems.
• Coordinate with the City of Tallahassee’s Electrical Distribution Control Room regarding facility operations and power levels.
• Take corrective actions in response to alarms or abnormal equipment operation.
• Participate in on-call duties.
• Perform DCS engineering functions: graphics, trend groups, control logic development and troubleshooting, field device integration.
• Troubleshoot between the DCS and field devices.
• Coordinate, prepare and issue Lock, Tag, Verify procedures for maintenance per NHMFL safety policies.
• Take a proactive attitude toward safety and contribute to NHMFL safety program.
• Assist with preventive maintenance programs and tracking of water-cooled magnets.
• Contribute to equipment and system characterization, repairs, maintenance, installation, integration and commissioning.
• Provide training on safe magnet operations and crane operations as necessary.
• Assist with design/operation changes to improve reliability; contribute to facility projects and give tours.

Responsibilities

Operate and maintain facility equipment and systems in support of the NHMFL’s DC high magnetic field user program. Interact with and assist users, research faculty, technicians and other NHMFL staff on the operation and maintenance of the facility.

Key Responsibilities:

• Monitor and safely operate facility equipment and systems. Coordinate with the City of Tallahassee’s Electrical Distribution Control Room with regards to facility operations and power levels.
• Take the proper corrective actions in response to alarms or other indications of abnormal equipment operation. Exercise skilled independent judgement in handling facility operations as well as unexpected or emergency situations.
• Participate in on-call duties.
• Perform engineering functions on the NHMFL Distributed Control System (DCS) such as graphic, trend group and control group building, logic development and troubleshooting, field device integration.
• Use knowledge of the DCS to perform troubleshooting between the DCS and field devices.
• Coordinate, prepare and issue Lock, Tag, Verify procedures for facility maintenance, troubleshooting and repair in accordance with NHMFL safety policies and procedures. Work with other NHMFL personnel in the evaluation and development of safety policies and procedures.
• Take a proactive attitude and make solution-oriented contributions to the NHMFL safety program.
• Assist Facility engineers, staff and scientists with the development of preventative maintenance programs and procedures. Assist Facility engineers and staff in tracking the performance and characteristics of the water-cooled magnets.
• Contribute to equipment and system characterization, troubleshooting, repairs, maintenance, installation, integration and commissioning.
• Provide training to users and staff on safe magnet operations, safe overhead crane operations and other safety procedures as necessary.
• In consultation with supervisor(s) and design engineers, assist with determining changes in design and operation of plant and power equipment to improve operations, capabilities, reliability and uptime. Contribute to facility projects. Giving tours.
