Technical Equipment Specialist Position Description

Position: Technical Equipment Specialist

Report to: Equipment Manager

Job Description Overview

This hybrid role blends field expertise with technical oversight. The ideal candidate is a seasoned mechanic who can troubleshoot complex equipment issues, support and mentor field mechanics, and manage behind-the-scenes responsibilities like warranty claims, oil sampling, and repair record oversight. The Technical Equipment Specialist will report to the Equipment Manager. Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to):

Responsibilities

  • Serve as field liaison for the Equipment Department, working with mechanics through virtual diagnostics and advanced repairs.
  • Oversee and manage warranty claims, oil sample analysis, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Track downed equipment and coordinate communication with project teams on expected repair timelines.
  • Schedule and maintain records for work orders, preventative maintenance, and outside repairs through HCSS E360 software.
  • Support onboarding of new equipment, including inspections, numbering, logo standardization, documentation, and setup in all software systems.
  • Assist in training and mentoring mechanics on technology, best practices, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the quantity and location of Kwest Group equipment fleet, offering informed recommendations for service, and repairs whether internal or external.
  • Monitor trends in breakdowns, maintenance issues, and provide proactive recommendations that are cost effective for the department.
  • Communicate with OEM reps and support teams as needed to resolve complex issues.
  • Monitor recurring equipment damage or failure trends and collaborate with the Equipment Manager to develop corrective actions, training, or process improvements.
  • Participate in fleet inspections and review of shop repair workflows.
  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of software applications supporting scheduling, record-keeping, and billing specific to construction equipment operations.
  • Collaborates with Equipment Manager on process improvements and standardization.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • 5+ years as a heavy equipment mechanic or PSSR/technical support role.
  • Strong working knowledge of CAT, Deere, Komatsu, or equivalent OEM systems.
  • Proficient computer skills, with a willingness to learn new software, including but not limited to HCSS.
  • Exceptional communication skills, self-motivated, and possesses excellent organizational abilities.
  • Familiar with maintenance record platforms like HCSS or VisionLink.
  • Capable of working under minimal supervision.
  • Commitment to continued education and staying current on advancements in equipment technology, diagnostics, and telematics tools.
  • Willingness to travel and stay out of town as necessary.
  • Comfortable transitioning between fieldwork and computer-based tasks.
  • Exhibits a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Commits to the principle of "doing right the first time."
  • Passion for equipment reliability, team development, and process improvement.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • This position is based on a 45–55-hour workweek.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, sit and move about the facility.
  • Regularly required to drive and negotiate various job sites, which can include climbing on/off equipment, ladders, etc.
  • Frequently required to sit, talk, or hear, and use hands to handle or touch objects or controls.
  • Regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion, the team member may be required to stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders.
  • Must occasionally lift up to 65 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The team member must be able to differentiate and/or identify colors.
  • Must have knowledge of occupational hazards in the construction field and standard safety practices. Must be able to pass the 30-Hour OSHA testing and First Aid/CPR requirements before starting work.
  • Must complete and meet requirements under the physical demands of this job description through a pre-employment physical examination.
