Job summary

WSP seeks an experienced Technical Director, Traffic Engineering to lead and grow our traffic engineering team in New York. The role will oversee complex projects, mentor staff, and drive technical excellence for local, state, and regional clients.

Ideal candidates bring 12+ years in traffic/ITS/safety planning, NY licensure or reciprocity, and strong leadership and proposal development skills. Some travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology, preferred, or equivalent years of experience.
• 12+ years of progressive experience in traffic, ITS, & safety planning, analysis, and design.
• Licensed Professional Engineer in NY or eligible for reciprocity within 6 months; PTOE certification preferred.
• Experience managing complex projects with budgets, schedules, and technical requirements.
• Experience with NYSDOT, MTA, and other regional agencies.
• Develop new project opportunities, manage client relationships, and prepare/manage proposals.
• Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-building skills.
• Exceptional communication abilities including written, verbal, and public speaking.

Responsibilities

• Lead project delivery and staff development with a focus on client satisfaction.
• Oversee multi-disciplinary teams and manage contracts and performance.
• Coordinate with clients, agencies, and partners to align scope and outcomes.
• Prepare and present project progress using dashboards and reports.
• Support the growth of WSP's Traffic Engineering practice in New York.
• Mentor junior staff and foster a culture of quality and safety.
