Job summary

RI Department of Revenue seeks a Taxpayer Service Specialist to assist taxpayers in preparing income tax returns, explaining tax obligations, and providing guidance on related procedures. The role includes in-person and telephone service, with a strong emphasis on accuracy and customer support.

Requirements include a Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business, and experience in government or private sector tax reporting. Office hours are Monday–Friday, 8:30am–4:00pm.

Qualifications

• A working knowledge of state tax laws and regulations for individual, corporate income tax and related taxes.
• Ability to apply tax laws to determine taxpayer situations; experience with accounting principles.
• Familiarity with Division of Taxation forms and notices; data extraction from various documents.
• Ability to communicate technical information to taxpayers and groups.

Responsibilities

• Interview taxpayers to determine income tax situations through analysis of provided information.
• Explain tax advice and potential consequences of actions for current and future years.
• Assist taxpayers in preparing income tax returns and maintaining related records.
• Explain collection and audit procedures and provide technical backup for staff.
• Meet with new business persons to explain tax obligations and provide ongoing assistance as needed.
