Qualifications

  • Experience with software compilation, patching and security management; configuring Linux automation with scripting (Bash, Lua, etc.), Ansible or Puppet, or cron jobs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Resolve account, application, file, network, and other issues in a timely manner.
  • Work within a team that shares responsibilities for system administration and user support for the department's instructional and research systems.
  • Maintain and upgrade existing infrastructure systems that provide enterprise services to the computing environment.
  • Maintain and upgrade existing infrastructure services and software.
  • Design and develop configurations, workflows, and system integration procedures.
  • Maintain technical documentation of deployed systems and services.
  • Perform the installation and initial configuration of operating systems; perform upgrades and apply security patches.
  • Participate in the development of test strategies, devices, and systems.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Job description

The University of Virginia Department of Computer Science (CS) is seeking aSystemsEngineerII to join our team. TheSystemsEngineerwill work independently or collaboratively on long-term projects, designs, and overall maintenance of the existing computing environment and related services. Further, the candidate will provide helpdesk ticketing support through a ticking system to students, faculty, and staff in the CS department.


The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree and experience administering an enterprise deployment of Linux, along with familiarity of typical deployments of Windows, MacOS, and Linux. Further, the ideal candidate will have experience with software compilation, patching and security management (Windows, Linux, MacOS), and configuring and maintaining Linux automation using scripting (Bash, Lua, etc.), Ansible or Puppet, or cron jobs.

Minimum Requirements (only one must be fulfilled):

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, ComputerEngineering or a related discipline, and at least 2 years of relevant experience.


Associate's degree and 3 years of relevant experience.


High school diploma and 4 years of relevant experience.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $70,000 - $84,000.


This position will remain open until filled. This is a non-exempt level, benefited position. The University will perform background checks on all hires (if required) prior to employment.Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's degree required; may consider combination of relevant experience, education, certification(s) in lieu of degree.


Experience: 2+ years relevant professional experience required.


Licensure: None.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of computers. Occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend training programs. Must be capable of lifting 25 - 50 lbs .
