Job summary

The YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is seeking a Swim Instructor to teach proper stroke and water safety for participants. Under supervision, you will work with staff to welcome, connect, support, and engage members, guests, and fellow team members.

You will lead in emergencies, manage equipment, monitor progress, and ensure a safe learning environment while upholding YMCA standards and participating in required trainings.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 16 years of age.
• Lifeguarding certifications preferred; cross over to YMCA Lifeguarding within six months of hire.
• Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor preferred; cross over within six months.
• Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required.
• Complete trainings: NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment on hire and annually.
• Background check and CPS check required.

Responsibilities

• Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
• Promote a professional work environment through character development and YMCA values.
• Lead to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
• Teach swim lessons in the water to assigned group for scheduled session without absence.
• Ensure all equipment and supplies are accessible before class.
• Maintain skills checklist for each student throughout session.
• Be familiar with swim levels you are certified to teach.
• Answer questions and communicate participants' progress.
• Wear proper attire (one-piece swimsuit) or professional attire when appropriate.
• Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
• Ensure certificates are ready on last day of session.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Act as a leader in emergencies and report accidents per plan.
• Ensure safety of all members, guests and participants per EOP.
• Maintain all relative certifications.
• Follow association guidelines.
• Promote YMCA fundraising including Annual Support and United Way campaigns.
• Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by Aquatics and center operations.
