Job summary

The YMCA of Portsmouth in Virginia Beach is seeking a dedicated Swim Lesson Instructor to deliver high-quality lessons in our aquatics program, following YMCA guidelines and lesson plans.

You will build meaningful relationships with students and families, maintain attendance and progress records, participate in staff trainings, and help promote safety and the YMCA’s mission of strengthening communities.

Qualifications

• Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification; crossover to YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor within 180 days if Red Cross WSI certified
• Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent); renewals annually
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills per YMCA standards
• At least 16 years of age

Responsibilities

• Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, using prepared lesson plans accordingly
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs
• Completes new staff orientation training as required, including blood borne pathogens and child abuse prevention
• Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.)
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment
• Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated with COVID-19 prevention
• Assists in all areas and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor
