Job summary

YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas is seeking a Swim Instructor to teach proper stroke and safety techniques in the water, and to foster a welcoming, supportive environment for members and guests.

You will work with other staff to promote youth development, healthy living and social responsibility while maintaining certifications and following safety procedures. This position emphasizes reliable class delivery, active supervision, and strong communication with participants and families.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 16 or older.
• Red Cross Lifeguard or YMCA Lifeguard preferred; cross over to YMCA Lifeguarding within six months.
• Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor preferred; cross over within six months.
• Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2.
• Complete trainings including NEO, Bloodborne Pathogens, CAP, Sexual Harassment on hire and annually.
• Criminal background and Child Protective Services checks required.

Responsibilities

• Teach swim lessons to assigned groups for scheduled sessions without absence.
• Ensure equipment and supplies are prepared before class starts.
• Maintain a skills checklist for each student across sessions.
• Be familiar with swim levels you are certified to teach.
• Track participant progress and communicate with families and staff.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Lead in emergencies and follow the Emergency Operations Plan.
