Job summary

UNC Health Johnston Health in Smithfield, NC, is accepting applications for a Surgical Technologist I in the Labor and Delivery unit. You will assist surgeons and nurses to ensure patient safety and aseptic technique in a high-volume maternity setting.

You will set up instruments, maintain sterile environments, perform counts, and participate in planning and instrument readiness across the Smithfield and Clayton campuses. Requires 0-3 years experience; BLS certification may be required.

Qualifications

• None required as long as other position qualifications are met.
• BLS for Healthcare Provider certification required or equivalent.
• Graduate of accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing program, or military training in Surgical Technology.
• 0-3 years of professional experience

Responsibilities

• Performs technical skills in operating room areas per standards.
• Maintains and sterilizes specialty instruments.
• Follows aseptic technique and corrects contamination.
• Performs surgical counts and reports discrepancies.
• Labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities.
• Prepares and labels surgical specimens.
• Sets up instruments and supplies for procedures.
• Assists the surgeon, understands anatomy relevant to procedure.
• Assists in planning instrument needs and case selection.
• Adapts scrubbing procedures and communicates with the team.
• Inventories and stores supplies under leadership.
• Identifies defective instruments and restocks rooms.
• Assists in intraoperative nursing activities.
• Operates complex equipment and troubleshoots as needed.
• Mentors Surgical Technician Trainees and serves as a preceptor
