Job summary

Carle Health in Springfield, MA seeks a Surgical Assistant to join our Operating Room team. You’ll support surgeons as the first or second assistant, participate in sterile techniques, and help prepare instruments and supplies for procedures.

The role offers varied shifts and scheduling options, with opportunities for growth, training, and relocation assistance as needed. A solid background in surgical technology and active BLS certification are required or pursued within 30 days.

Qualifications

• Formal education in surgical technology and/or credentialing as CSA/CST is required or preferred.
• BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
• Active licensure as Surgical Assistant or CST/CSA as applicable in licensure state.

Responsibilities

• Maintain sterile environment and aseptic technique throughout procedures.
• Assist surgeon intraoperatively, including suctioning, retraction, and instrument handling.
• Prepare and organize supplies and equipment for efficient OR turnover.
• Coordinate with nursing staff to plan patient care and room setup.
• Operate autoclave sterilization units and ensure equipment readiness.
• Provide preceptor duties and training to students and junior staff.
