Job description

Summary

The Dayton VA Medical Center is seeking a Chief for the Sterile Processing Service (SPS). The Chief is responsible for planning, directing, and managing all areas of the SPS department, including decontamination, sterile preparation, non-biological implantable devices, reprocessing of reusable medical devices, and inventory control.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.
  • Experience and/or Education: Six months of experience demonstrating ability or understanding of the work, or one year of education beyond high school including health care-related courses.
  • Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education acceptable for entry-level positions.
  • Certification: None required. MSTs employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date are considered to meet all basic requirements.
  • Foreign Education: Must be evaluated by a private organization for equivalency if completed outside the U.S.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Grade Determinations (GS-10):
  • One year of experience equivalent to GS-09.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities including ability to manage SPS operations, evaluate products, perform supervisory duties, analyze fiscal data, and strategic planning.
Physical Requirements:

Some walking, standing, lifting, and carrying are required, along with working in contaminated and clean environments, wearing protective clothing, and exposure to loud noises and odors.

Duties
  • Planning work, setting priorities, and scheduling.
  • Interviewing candidates, recommending appointments, promotions, and reassignments.
  • Training and developing staff.
  • Managing collection, receipt, processing, and inventory of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Overseeing decontamination, sterilization, and high-level disinfection activities.
  • Maintaining quality assurance and electronic tracking systems.
  • Managing budgets, inventory, and equipment valued over $1.4 million.
  • Developing and maintaining a Quality Control Program and ISO 9001 Quality Management System.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule and Benefits
  • Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
