Job description

Purpose of Job


This position is responsible for the daily performing routine activities in the decontamination, reprocessing/sterilization of supplies, instrument trays, and equipment necessary for patient care.


Job Functions


1. Provides specialized experience and direct responsibility for providing clean and sterile medical/surgical supplies and equipment for use in all patient care areas in-house and for all off-site clinics.


2. Utilizes appropriate techniques in preparation, packaging, and sterilization functions maintaining a basic knowledge of microbiological principles for SPD practice.


3. Performs testing and documentation of sterilization function with appropriate graphs and indicators.


4. Maintains an adequate supply of patient related instruments and SPD equipment, including management of repairs, maintenance (e.g., sharpening, etc.), and renting as needed to meet the demand.


5. Maintains an adequate supply of sterile linen needed for daily usage in Surgical Services.


6. Utilizes effective communication skills in interpersonal relationships with co-workers and other members of the healthcare team.


7. Provides oversite and management of orientation and training.Acts as the subject matter expert and super-user for the instrument tracking system.


8. Collaborates and provides feedback to the manager regarding performance assessment


9. Provides input into the operational and capital budget process.


10. Effectively and efficiently manages staffing and scheduling to meet the needs of the department and surgical services.



11. Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Education/Work Experience


  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • 2-5 years of SPD basic equipment experience with knowledge of sterilization methods and procedures, instrumentation, and aseptic technique

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


  • Ability to serve internal and external customers in a friendly and efficient manner
  • Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence to complete job functions as mentioned above
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a team and, to coordinate instrument processing with daily surgical schedule
  • Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations
  • Ability to perform strenuous work under time constraints
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions in the English language and respond accordingly in order to complete job functions as mentioned above

License/Certifications


  • SPD Certification (e.g., CSPDT, CASSPT, CFER, CSPM, CSIS) or acquisition within 12 months of hire
  • BLS Certification of obtained within the 12 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications


  • Precious leadership experience in a hospital setting

  • Post-Secondary education degree completion or actively pursing

Many factors are taken into consideration when determining compensation such as: the requirements of the position, experience, education, knowledge, and skills along with location and internal equity. Pay listed does not include any shift, weekend, or other differentials.
