Job description

Job Opening: Chief, Sterile Processing Service (SPS) at Dayton VA Medical Center

The Dayton VA Medical Center is seeking a Chief, Sterile Processing Service (SPS). This role involves planning, directing, and managing all aspects of the SPS department, including decontamination, sterile preparation, non-biological implantable devices, reusable medical device reprocessing, and inventory control.

Major duties include but are not limited to:

Responsibilities encompass overseeing daily operations, ensuring compliance with regulations, evaluating new products and equipment, strategic planning, supervising staff, and managing resources.

Requirements
Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience and/or Education:
  • Six months of experience demonstrating ability to perform or understand the work; or
  • One year of higher education including at least 6 semester hours in healthcare-related courses; or
  • Combination of experience and education that qualifies for entry-level.

No certification is required for this position.

Grandfathering Provision: Current MSTs employed in VHA in this occupation are considered to have met all qualification requirements. Reassignment, promotion, or transfer within the occupation is permitted under this provision.

Foreign Education: Education outside the U.S. must be evaluated by a specialized organization to determine equivalency.

English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

Grade Determinations GS-10

One year of experience equivalent to GS-09 is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Ability to implement regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate new products and equipment.
  • Strategic planning and integration of SPS goals within organizational mission.
  • Supervisory skills including work planning, evaluation, and staff management.
  • Leadership in interdisciplinary group facilitation.
  • Fiscal analysis and resource forecasting skills.

The full performance level is GS-10; applicants may be selected at this grade.

Physical Requirements

This role involves walking, standing, lifting moderately heavy items, and working in contaminated and clean environments. Protective clothing and hearing protection may be required. The work environment may be hot, humid, noisy, and odorous.
