Job description

Supervisor, Production (Finance)



The following duties are normal for this position. The incumbent may perform some or all of these duties, however, it is not an exclusive or all-inclusive list. Other duties may be assigned.
  • The supervisor will have responsibility for all activities and personnel relating to the equipment that is operating under his/her immediate supervision. The active work centers and number of personnel will vary depending on workload and crew availability.
  • Review the daily shift schedule to verify all machine centers are manned properly and safely.
  • Review work center schedule and ensure the jobs are lined up for maximum efficiency to eliminate unnecessary set-up/down time.
  • Meet daily with plant management and scheduling to ensure all necessary production/scheduling information for each particular day is communicated.
  • Monitor employees to ensure that all safety regulations are followed, and ensure all employees complete required safety training.
  • Review material consumption reports daily to ensure that outside purchased sheets, master packers, and roll stock are being consumed properly by work centers.
  • Review all shift data entries in SAP system to eliminate errors.
  • As needed, facilitate meetings with machine center crews to ensure that the Standard Operating Procedures for machine usage are in place and being followed.
  • Train employees that are lacking in the proper usage of the BVP system.
  • Update physical inventory on packers when needed.
  • Responsible for approving first time jobs. This includes examining the job for proper function, die-cut, gluing, color, registration, print orientation, flute, paper combinations and, most importantly, whether its function matches that of the customer approved sample.
  • Responsible for Lean Manufacturing at the machine centers. This includes work center auditing; holding meetings as needed with 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift crews to ensure Lean practices are followed; and holding general training sessions in Lean manufacturing for employees that lack this specific skill set.
  • Adjust work center schedules according to unplanned for customer demands and needs, with the caveat that jobs that are pushed back in the line-up will not harm other customer relationships.
  • Responsible to cover machine center overtime when called upon by the plant manager to do so.
  • Responsible to schedule overtime when unforeseen occurrences or customer demand dictates.
  • Responsible to schedule machine clean ups with plant management as needed.
  • Assist machine operators with quality control to ensure the product that leaves the building meets Menasha's specified standard of quality.
  • Ensure all maintenance work orders on the shift for machine repair, tooling repair or machine maintenance are filled out by the proper employees and then acted upon by the proper department in a timely matter.
  • Assist any employee that suffers an injury on the job. This includes deciding upon the proper medical care (i.e. whether it is an emergency room incident), documenting the incident and then in turn, investigating the root causes of the incident to prevent further occurrences.
  • Provide and maintain training for machine center tasks and Standard Operating Procedures as needed
  • Utilize the skill sets of the shift employees in the proper manner to ensure the right employees with the proper skill sets are doing the tasks they are best suited to do.
  • Responsible to communicate with other departments when errors occur that effect or alter a job or product. This includes following through to ensure all errors have been addressed and/or corrected.
  • Responsible to keep track of shift production and downtime statistics. This is to verify that runtimes are efficient, downtimes are minimized and company goals are being met.
  • Required to keep an active presence on production floor and provide leadership, motivation, and feedback to employees under their supervision, as well as to ensure the machinery is operating and employees are working at an acceptable level.

Knowledge:

  • Should have a firm knowledge of the company policies and procedures as well as an understanding of the corrugated industry.
  • Should be knowledgeable concerning process flow and product quality.
  • A solid understanding of the impact of quality and efficiency on cost and profit.

2. Skills and Abilities:
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to determine when teaching, coaching, and discipline are appropriate.
  • Good listening skills and the ability to provide positive feedback.

3. Attributes:
  • Mature and approachable. Able to communicate at all levels of the organization as well as with customers during plant visits and trial runs.
  • Should have leadership ability and be able to gain respect from direct reports as a result of that ability.

Education:
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Five or more years as a line leader, machine operator, or previous experience as a shift supervisor.
