Job summary

CMA CGM is seeking an experienced Intermodal Operations Supervisor in Norfolk, VA. You will supervise the Intermodal Door team and oversee daily dispatch of import/export containers to ensure on-time delivery and adherence to service levels.

You will collaborate with overseas offices, home office, customer service, operations, sales and trade to optimize routes, control costs, and resolve issues. Strong communication and leadership are essential.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
  • General experience of 1–3 years.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Intermodal Door team and oversee daily dispatch of import/export containers.
  • Ensure shipments are received and delivered efficiently and on time.
  • Coordinate with overseas offices, home office, customer service, operations, sales, and trade.
  • Monitor service levels and communicate performance to stakeholders.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and manage accessorial charges.
  • Prepare weekly performance indicators and support vendor management.

Position Summary

Responsible for the supervision of the assigned Intermodal Door team and oversees the day-to-day dispatch of all import and export loaded containers to ensure shipments are received and delivered in an efficient and timely manner. Manages to ensure standard processes are followed by direct reports and ensures work load is evenly distributed. Handles and resolves elevated issues by working with other internal departments and external customers. Looks for ways to improve Best Practices and communicates to upper management. Is cognizant that their work affects not just the Intermodal Department, but can have an impact on all other departments within the company.

Functions & Duties
  • Service Delivery Coordination
  • Manages the overall movement of containers to ensure door appointments are met and cargo is loaded/delivered timely
  • Works collaboratively with internal departments to expedite transport, including but not limited to
    • Overseas Offices
    • Home office
    • Customer service
    • Operations
    • Sales
    • Trade
  • Manages a significant volume of telephone and written communication within agreed upon Service Level Agreements
  • Serves as an elevated contact for service related issues or requests
  • Assists sales team with operational questions and/or service limitations prior to filing customer contracts
  • Cost Management
  • Scrutinizes accessorial charges to ensure the team is notifying and rebilling the customer for additional transport related expenses including but not limited to
    • Pre-Pulls
    • Revenue generating trucker yard and container yard storage
    • Multi-stops
    • Drop and picks
  • Identifies opportunities through macro analysis of customer locations for cost savings which includes match backs/one ways
  • Refreshes data daily in match back database
  • Analyze the results and provide dispatchers with potential moves to match
  • Determines, if requested by vendors, whether accessorial charges are applicable
  • Identifies ways to improve Best Practices
  • Monitors idle cargo to avoid port/rail storage at company expense
  • Monitors vendor work order discrepancies and serves as elevated contact
  • Monitors idle aging containers
  • Guarantees storage charges at rails/ports for service related issues or when applicable based on a service contract
  • Assists management in the implementation/management of cost savings initiatives and identifying additional cost savings opportunities
  • Approves spot rates by vendors that do not fall within established house carrier rates
  • Dispatch Management
  • Delegates work assignments
  • Allocates proper work coverage to ensure all duties can be completed on a daily basis by
    • Monitors staffing levels
    • Approves/Denies vacation requests
    • Monitors absenteeism and tardies
    • Re-allocates staff as needed to support daily/weekly volume levels
    • Ensures associates adhere to company/departmental policy and procedures
    • Communicate changes to policies and procedures through written and verbal communication
    • Serves as Intermodal Technical expert
  • Assists team members with minor operational issues
  • Resolves or elevates as needed major operational issues/problems/questions
  • Act as role model while simultaneously promoting exceptional customer service within the team
  • Compile weekly key performance indicators
  • Provide ongoing feedback on employee performance
  • Establishes goals and sets expectations for subordinates
  • Vendor Management
  • Monitors and reports trucker performance
  • Takes part in truck vendor meetings
  • Develops and maintains rapport with truck vendors
  • Monitor truck distribution
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Solid working knowledge of Intermodal Transportation operating process
  • Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft Office applications
  • Detail-oriented person with strong organizational skills

At CMA CGM, we are committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The expected salary range for this position is $65,000 - $72,000 per year. The actual salary offered will be based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s qualifications, skills, experience, and location.

In addition to base salary, this position may be eligible for: Performance-based bonuses. Comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, tuition repayment and paid time off professional development opportunities
