WHO WE ARE: California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. (CRLA) is an anti-poverty law firm that dismantles unjust systems through community lawyering in California’s historically rural areas. We work with people priced out of private legal representation so they can uphold civil rights in housing, employment, health, and public education. Through our 17 Rural Justice Centers, communities can access a broad range of legal tools, including direct legal services, place-based advocacy to expand equity in civic institutions, and specialized litigation to advance civil rights.

Position: Supervising Attorney – Housing Practice Area
Reports to: Directing Attorney

Position Overview:

The Supervising Attorney will manage and supervise a team of advocates, ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal services and adherence to CRLA’s standards. This role focuses on implementing strategies developed by Housing Practice Area leadership and supervising day-to-day advocacy efforts and the operations of legal services teams. This position will also contribute to housing advocacy with a statewide view, supporting CRLA’s mission across all client communities with a focus on eviction prevention.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Supervision: Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team, including attorneys, caseworkers, and support staff, fostering professional growth and collaboration.
  • Advocacy Oversight: Review and supervise legal work, including litigation, legal advice, and community engagement, to ensure high-quality services and strategic alignment.
  • Implementation of Goals: Execute work plans and strategic objectives developed by the Legal Director and Directing Attorneys, ensuring timely and effective delivery.
  • Case Management: Carry a small caseload focused on high-impact housing cases, such as tenant rights and foreclosure defense, and co-counsel with team members to provide strategic guidance. Ensure alignment with program objectives while dedicating the majority of time to supervision and mentoring of team members.
  • Administrative Duties: Oversee team workflows, monitor compliance with grant deliverables, and ensure adherence to CRLA policies, timekeeping, and ethical standards.
  • Staff Development: Identify professional development opportunities for team members, facilitate training sessions, and contribute to a positive and inclusive workplace culture.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years in advocacy roles, the majority of which should be experience as an attorney, preferably within one of CRLA’s substantive practice areas.
  • At least 2 years of leadership responsibilities, preferably supervising attorneys or advocates.
  • Experience in systemic advocacy, including impactful litigation, policy campaigns, and collaboration with community organizations.
  • Admitted to the California Bar or another state bar with a willingness to take the next California Bar Exam.
  • Experience working with diverse client populations, particularly rural, low-income, BIPOC, or underserved communities.

Highly Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to support high-volume caseloads and work within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with state and federal housing laws, including tenant protections and housing justice frameworks.
  • Fluency in Spanish or another language relevant to CRLA’s client communities.
  • Experience co-counseling with junior attorneys or managing advocacy campaigns.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit legal service environments and grant compliance requirements.
  • Experience building coalitions with government agencies, community organizations, and other stakeholders to advance systemic advocacy.
  • Knowledge of systemic barriers and housing justice issues impacting underserved communities.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

We offer a diverse, family-friendly environment and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries; generous benefits package which includes 100% employer-covered medical, dental, vision, life, and short & long-term disability insurance for employees and up to 50% for dependents coverage; and 401K retirement plan with CRLA contribution effective immediately. Some professional dues are paid by CRLA (Bar Fees) and, if qualified, up to $8,000 law school Loan Reimbursement Assistance Program (LRAP). Generous paid leave policy which includes; 15 days of sick leave, 15 holidays each year, and vacation (accrue 15 days for the first year of service and 20 days after one year of service at CRLA). This is a non-union position, and the salary ranges from (Supervising Attorney: $100,000-$113,500) depending on each year of admission to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction and any relevant law-related work experience prior to being admitted to practice law.
