The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits seeks a Supervising Attorney for KFCMN to provide leadership and direct representation to relatives in the child welfare system. The role involves training staff, managing legal consultations, and developing interdisciplinary legal services. Overview
Keeping Families Connected Minnesota (KFCMN) is a non-profit founded in 2024 to provide support to families, including relatives, impacted by Minnesota’s child welfare system. Our mission is to prevent family separation through interdisciplinary legal services and equity-based child welfare policy reform. The legal services model we are building will reach families and relatives across the state.

The Supervising Attorney will provide leadership as we design and implement our interdisciplinary legal services framework and provide direct representation to relatives seeking to prevent child welfare involvement or who need support during any part of the child welfare process.In our first two years relatives will access our legal services by calling our hotline, attending a clinic at a Family Resource Center or other community location and/or by receiving direct representation by one of our attorneys. The Supervising Attorney will provide all three of these services.

Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for important work, including:
Train, manage and support additional staff attorneys (up to 4)
Lead design and implementation of statewide hotline to provide consultation and legal advice to relatives and others on child welfare related matters
Provide legal information and advice via hotline, in person at community clinics and through direct representation
Stakeholder relationship development and engagement
Client-centered practice with interdisciplinary legal team to meet individuals where they are at
Drafting motions, affidavits, legal arguments, testimony, and trial briefs
Hearing preparation
Case consultation and strategizing with a client
Communicating with the opposing party, courts, and others
Performing case law research to identify and apply relevant judicial decisions, statutes, etc.
Investigating the facts of a case
Reviewing and monitoring new and updated laws and regulations
Crafting substantive correspondence
Required Qualifications
8+ years experience in Minnesota family law and/or child welfare practice and procedures
Admitted to Minnesota Bar and in good standing
Strong courtroom, research, and legal writing skills
Attention to detail and accuracy
Emotional Intelligence
Open-minded and willing to learn
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
Technologically savvy
Strong time management and organizational skills
Able to juggle tasks and change gears quickly
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
Experience with child welfare practice and procedure, including child protection removal, licensing appeals, guardianship, adoption proceedings and similar
Training and/or practice in trauma-informed care
Experience providing legal services collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team
Understanding of the equity issues, racial disparities and disproportionate representation in families most likely to face intervention by the child protection
Experience with Legal Server
Positions Supervised:By December 2026 the Supervising Attorney will provide supervision to four Associate Attorneys.

Compensation
$100,000-$105,000 annually. Health and retirement benefits plus generous PTO and flexible holidays.KFCMN will offer the highest possible salary in this range, based on the candidate’s qualifications. Consistent with KFCMN’s commitment to equitable hiring practices, the organization does not negotiate starting salary.
Work Location and Conditions
At the current time, all KFCMN employees work remotely and in the field most of the time. An annual home office stipend, laptop, monitors and docking station are provided. Several times a month all employees will be required to meet in person at a central location (TBD) in the twin cities metro area to work together on organization and program development activities. Other fieldwork includes at least one day each month providing in-person legal consultation at a Family Resource Center somewhere in the state (there are several locations).
The workday at KFCMN is flexible, but primarily Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm, with some evenings and occasional weekends for special events.
Employees are reimbursed for mileage. For law clinic activities or serving clients further away, access to a rental car is available.

KFCMN is a fair chance employer. Hiring is contingent on a valid driver’s license, current vehicle insurance, and a responsible driving record.
