Job description

The location in Plymouth, North Carolina, United States, is seeking to fill the position of Superintendent, Maintenance. This is a full‑time permanent role.

Reporting to the Maintenance & Engineering Manager, the Maintenance Superintendent will provide strategic leadership and direction to maintenance teams to meet business requirements for efficient production while utilizing Lean manufacturing tools. They will manage predictive maintenance systems to optimize equipment reliability and ensure cost‑effective maintenance service delivery, and lead the department safely and efficiently, setting strategic direction aligned with safety, reliability, cost, and personnel development goals.

Essential Functions
  • Ensure all safety practices and procedures are consistently followed, including Show Me audits and HPI, and ensure that all maintenance employees understand their personal safety responsibilities.
  • Proactively support a culture of safety excellence and lead by example.
  • Establish, maintain, and support effective programs that promote a sustainable, environmentally responsible manufacturing process.
  • Manage performance of all direct and indirect reports (planners, team leaders, engineers, crafts) within the Maintenance Department to improve reliability.
  • Lead and integrate reliability‑centered maintenance practices and predictive maintenance tools (e.g., vibration analysis, thermography, lube analysis, ultrasonic analysis, failure analysis).
  • Plan and execute outages and down days, ensuring that all unplanned outages, maintenance projects, and troubleshooting activities are completed efficiently and effectively and within cost constraints.
  • Diagnose breakdowns and conduct timely repairs to maximize equipment and process availability.
  • Monitor and track downtime data, work toward eliminating repeat failures through root cause problem solving, and implement solutions with timely follow‑up.
  • Proactively identify potential problem areas, increase reliability, and reduce costs.
  • Ensure predictive and preventive maintenance schedules are adhered to and aligned with a more predictable culture.
  • Develop and implement the area maintenance budget, driving year‑over‑year cost improvement while ensuring all maintenance work is performed on schedule and within budget.
  • Set performance expectations and provide feedback to direct reports to support employee development.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with union leadership to ensure sustainable business operations and results, ensuring alignment with Labor Agreements, Rules & Regulations, Domtar policies, and government regulations.
  • Be willing for on‑call rotation and occasional extended work hours during upset conditions.
  • Establish and maintain an open line of communications between Operations & Maintenance leadership so that necessary work is performed as needed to maintain safe & efficient operations.

Education and Experience
  • A four (4) year undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a technical or engineering major (preferred).
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of maintenance experience in an industrial setting or environment with a strong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of maintenance supervisory experience in a large heavy manufacturing environment (required).
