Job description

Domtar is a leading producer of pulp, paper, packaging, tissue and wood products that focuses on safety and sustainability to deliver high‑quality and cost‑effective products worldwide.

The Plymouth, NC location is seeking a full‑time, permanent Superintendent, Maintenance. The role reports to the Maintenance & Engineering Manager and is responsible for providing strategic leadership to the maintenance teams to meet business requirements for efficient production of pulp and paper using lean manufacturing tools and processes.

Essential Functions
  • Ensure all safety practices and procedures are consistently followed, including Show Me audits and HPI.
  • Develop a culture of safety excellence and lead by example.
  • Establish, maintain, and support programs that promote a sustainable, environmentally responsible manufacturing process.
  • Manage performance of all direct and indirect reports in the Maintenance Department to improve reliability.
  • Lead reliability‑centered maintenance practices and predictive maintenance tools (vibration analysis, thermography, lube analysis, ultrasonic analysis, failure analysis techniques).
  • Plan and execute outages and downtime, ensuring unplanned maintenance, projects and troubleshooting activities are managed efficiently to minimize business impact while controlling costs.
  • Diagnose breakdowns and repair equipment promptly to maximize availability.
  • Track downtime data to eliminate repeat failures through root‑cause analysis and implement solutions.
  • Identify potential problem areas proactively to increase reliability and reduce costs.
  • Adhere to predictive and preventive maintenance schedules and advance a more predictable culture.
  • Develop and implement the area maintenance budget, driving year‑over‑year cost improvement.
  • Ensure maintenance work is performed on schedule and within budgetary limits.
  • Set performance expectations and provide feedback to direct reports for personnel development.
  • Maintain positive relationships with union leadership, ensuring alignment with labor agreements, policies and regulations.
  • Be willing to serve on‑call rotations and work occasional extended hours during upset conditions.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, positive attitude and leadership of a maintenance team that includes engineers, planners and front‑line supervisors.
  • Show familiarity with reliability‑centered and predictive maintenance tools.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Apply leadership skills to coach and develop team members.
  • Display organizational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Show strong technical capability and a results‑driven approach.
  • Use Microsoft Office products and SAP Enterprise system with Plant Maintenance management processes.
  • Hold reliability‑centered maintenance training.
  • Have experience in the pulp and paper industry.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a four‑year undergraduate degree in a technical or engineering discipline (preferred).
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of maintenance experience in an industrial setting with strong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude.
  • At least five (5) years of supervisory experience in a large heavy‑manufacturing environment.
