Job summary

Newport-Mesa Unified School District is seeking substitutes to operate school buses on a temporary/as-needed basis. Duties include transporting students safely to designated locations, performing safety checks, and maintaining required records.

The role requires flexibility in hours and the ability to work with diverse student groups. Applicants must have a valid California commercial license with passenger endorsement, S, and air brake endorsements, plus a CHP First Aid certificate if required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Six months of bus driver experience preferred
• Valid Class A/B California driver license with passenger endorsement, S and air brake endorsements
• California Special Driver Certificate for school buses
• Current DMV printout issued within 30 days
• CHP First Aid certificate if required by Special Driver Certificate
• Current DL-51 Medical Card

Responsibilities

• Drive a school bus along a designated route and pick up/discharge students on schedule
• Observe traffic laws and ensure student safety on and around buses
• Maintain order and discipline of passengers per district policies
• Conduct daily safety inspections and report mechanical issues
• Keep logs and related reports up to date
• Assist handicapped students with boarding, seating, and securing restraints
