Job summary

Surveying And Mapping, LLC (SAM) is seeking a Substation Field Technician to collect field data in electrical substations and along transmission corridors, using proprietary geospatial software. You will work in a field environment, perform measurements on conductors and equipment, and read substation diagrams.

Travel up to 90% of the time across the continental US, mainly in the mid-west, south and southeast, with opportunities to develop GIS/data management skills and advance within SAM.

Qualifications

  • Willingness to travel for field assignments up to 90% of the time.
  • Ability to work with a team of technicians and developers to improve processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret substation schematic diagrams.
  • Capable of fieldwork and lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting in field conditions.
  • Familiarity with HD cameras and digital photo setups.
  • Possession or willingness to obtain FAA Part-107 pilot license.
  • Experience with GIS or Geodatabase files is a plus.
  • Knowledge of NERC FAC-008 and FAC-009 is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Excel and other database formats.
  • Advanced, professional writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field data collection in substations and along transmission corridors.
  • Interpret field data to identify conductor types and sizing.
  • Prepare materials and diagrams for field crews and work plans.
  • Interact with field crews and clients to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Adhere to safety procedures and maintain professional conduct in the field.
  • Assist other operational units as needed.
  • Coordinate data downloads and equipment interconnections between field and office.
