Job summary

Actalent is seeking a Substation Engineer in California to lead design, modeling, and protection schemes for distribution and substation projects. You will develop relay settings, coordinate with vendors, and support BESS integration and grid modernization efforts.

The role emphasizes collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, mentoring junior engineers, and involvement in renewable energy and microgrid initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field.
• EIT certification is preferred for career progression.
• 5+ years of experience in utility, consulting, or substation design engineering.
• Demonstrated experience in substation design, distribution engineering, and power delivery projects.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop distribution and substation projects including transformers, switchgear, protection and control schemes, and service connections.
• Conduct power system modeling and studies using ETAP, SKM, CYME, or ASPEN including load flow and short circuit analyses.
• Design overhead and underground distribution systems with equipment selection and specification.
• Develop relay settings using tools such as SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista, or ASPEN.
• Troubleshoot relay, SCADA, and protection issues with field teams.
• Provide technical support for BESS design and grid integration.
• Coordinate with vendors and construction crews for procurement, installation, and commissioning.
• Develop construction packages with one-line diagrams and detailed specs.
• Collaborate with civil and other disciplines to ensure project delivery.
• Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge within the team.
• Support renewable energy, microgrid, EV infra planning, and distribution upgrades.
• Engage utilities and clients to understand requirements and provide technical solutions.
