Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a PhD Mechanical Engineer to model and analyze submarine launcher systems, using data from patrols to understand performance. You will perform CFD modeling on our HPC cluster, apply physics-based bulk volume analysis in MATLAB/Simulink and Python, and develop streamlined, maintainable workflows across modeling tools.

Travel ~5% to Navy facilities, eligibility for security clearance, and delivery of technical reports to sponsors

Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in fluid dynamics through coursework or experience.
  • Willing to learn new tools and transform workflows in a Digital Engineering environment.
  • Willing to travel ~5% to U.S. Navy facilities and contractor sites.
  • Must be eligible for Interim Secret security clearance and eventually a Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop deep technical expertise in submarine launcher and shipboard systems by analyzing patrol data.
  • Perform CFD modeling on HPC cluster, including mesh generation and post-processing.
  • Conduct physics-based bulk volume modeling and data analysis in MATLAB/Simulink and Python.
  • Implement best practices and create maintainable workflows for modeling tools.
  • Validate simulations against test data to assess accuracy and fidelity.
  • Support test and evaluation efforts at government facilities or Navy platforms.
  • Provide technical recommendations to sponsors and prepare briefing materials.
