Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a PhD to model and analyze submarine launcher systems and related shipboard platforms. You will run CFD on an in-house HPC cluster, apply MATLAB/Simulink and Python for bulk-volume analysis, and develop streamlined workflows.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
  • Strong interest in fluid dynamics demonstrated through coursework or research.
  • Willing to learn new tools and adapt workflows in a Digital Engineering environment.
  • Ability to travel ~5% to U.S. Navy facilities and contractor sites.
  • Eligible to obtain Interim Secret clearance and ultimately a Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze patrol data to understand submarine launcher and shipboard systems.
  • Perform CFD modeling on HPC cluster including mesh creation and post-processing.
  • Conduct bulk volume analysis using MATLAB/Simulink and Python.
  • Develop maintainable workflows across modeling and analysis tools.
  • Validate simulations against test data to assess fidelity.
  • Support test and evaluation at government facilities or Navy platforms.
  • Provide technical recommendations to sponsors and prepare briefing materials.
  • Prepare technical reports for internal staff, government, and industry partners.
