Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a PhD Mechanical Engineer to model and analyze submarine launcher systems, performing CFD on a high-performance computing cluster and developing physics-based models.

You will work with data from operational submarines to validate simulations, integrate new analysis methods, and provide technical recommendations to sponsors. APL offers a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment near the Baltimore-Washington area.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in fluid dynamics through coursework or research.
  • Willingness to learn new tools and transform workflows in a Digital Engineering environment.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (5%) to U.S. Navy facilities and contractor sites.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret clearance by start date and eventual Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop deep technical expertise on submarine launcher and shipboard systems from patrol data.
  • Perform CFD modeling, mesh creation, execution, and post-processing on HPC cluster.
  • Conduct physics-based bulk volume modeling and data analysis in MATLAB/Simulink and Python.
  • Implement coding best practices and maintainable workflows across modeling tools.
  • Validate simulations against test data to assess fidelity.
  • Support test and evaluation efforts at government facilities or onboard Navy platforms.
  • Provide technical recommendations to sponsors based on design proposals.
