Job summary

East Side House Settlement in the Bronx is seeking a Student Advisor in the Youth Department at Bronx Design and Construction High School. The role supports attendance improvement, builds relationships with students and families, and helps students feel connected and supported across after-school and school-year programs.

Reporting to the Community School Director, you will coordinate resources to address attendance, academic and socio-emotional needs.

Qualifications

• B.A./ B.S.W. with at least two years’ experience with youth-related work.
• Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively with school aged youth, educators, families and communities from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience working in school-based settings with knowledge of community organizing, student support services, and youth development theories.
• Ability to work collaboratively with strong relationship-building skills.
• Knowledge of WordPerfect and Microsoft Word and other applications.
• Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
• Some nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Primary person advisor for assigned cohort of students.
• Conduct regular one-on-one sessions with students, at least twice a month.
• Support students to create SMART goals and work toward implementation.
• Develop an individualized plan for each student with families and school teams.
• Conduct and support student advisory groups in collaboration with school faculty.
• Provide updates on progress of students to Leadership and key school staff; participate in weekly case conferencing.
• Provide crises intervention and counseling for students as needed, under supervision.
• Provide attendance outreach through calls, texts, letters, and home visits.
• Organize and implement special activities/events meeting recreational and cultural needs of the school community.
• Support new student admission process (outreach, intake interviews, orientation, parent orientations).
• Partner with students to identify opportunities and referrals based on need and aspiration.
• With Program Director, create best practices for cohort management and support services.
• Collaborate with leadership to design tools and strategies to track program goals.
• Attend and participate in school/community meetings and trainings.
• Complete tasks and projects assigned by Program Director.
