Job summary

East Side House Settlement in the Bronx, NY, is seeking a Student Advisor to support a caseload of 60–70 students, conducting intake interviews, and assisting with attendance and academic progress.

You will collaborate with guidance counselors, teachers, and families to develop post-secondary plans and provide feedback on academic performance, using Salesforce and Google Suite to document interactions. Some evenings and remote work may be required.

Qualifications

  • B.A/ B.S.W. degree is required with at least two years youth services experience.
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, written, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and multi-task.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and time management skills.
  • Minimum intermediate knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office including Word and Teams / Google Suite, Zoom, and other applications.

Responsibilities

  • Be a primary person of contact for a caseload of approximately 60-70 students.
  • Conduct intake interviews with students and family members.
  • Conduct daily attendance, academic, and social-emotional outreach via phone, remotely, or home visit.
  • Consult with guidance counselors on student credit accumulation, graduation date, and post-secondary plans.
  • Consult with teachers and provide feedback to students on academic performance.
  • Refer students to academic and support services as needed.
  • Attend administrative meetings, program trainings and staff development.
  • Meet with caseload in a group or individual setting to assist them in their academic, career, and personal goals.
  • Educate students about colleges, the college admissions process, FAFSA, trends, procedures, and testing; advise students as they go through the process and help them aspire realistically and choose wisely.
  • Walk students through employment opportunities.
  • Conduct informal counseling sessions for students to support their social-emotional development.
  • Document all interactions with students on Salesforce, Google Suite, and other data systems as required.
  • Participate in civic and community building efforts and activities as assigned via East Side House Community Development.
  • Participate and help arrange field trips, special events and extracurricular activities
  • Provide other program support functions as required
  • Maintain flexible hours and workdays, some overnight trips required
  • Some evenings, weekends, and remote work required

Organization SummaryEast Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.

ESH is directly responsible for the administration Learning-to-Work Program, which enhances the school’s academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships. ESH works in a transfer schools, serving students who struggled in a traditional high school setting. The program is designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out of high school.

Primary Functions

Duties and Responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:

  • Consult with teachers and provide feedback to students on academic performance
  • Refer students to academic and support services as needed
  • Attend administrative meetings, program trainings and staff development. Meetings may require virtual attendance
  • Meet with caseload in a group or individual setting to assist them in their academic, career, and personal goals. Some individual and group work will require the usage of remote platforms, or be socially distanced
  • Conduct workshops, social-emotional groups, interest groups, or other groups for caseload
  • Educate students about colleges, the college admissions process, FAFSA, trends, procedures, and testing; advise students as they go through the process and help them aspire realistically and choose wisely
  • Walk students through employment opportunities
  • Conduct informal counseling sessions for students to support their social-emotional development
  • Document all interactions with students on Salesforce, Google Suite, and other data systems as required
  • Participate in civic and community building efforts and activities as assigned via East Side House Community Development

Expected Work Schedule

This is a full-time position. Monday -Friday, 8:00AM- 4:00PM
