UNC Health's Youth Behavioral Health Cardinal Unit invites a Student Nurse Extern I to join a 14-bed adolescent inpatient unit in Butner, NC. This temporary full-time role supports RN partners, provides direct and indirect patient care, and participates in orientation in Chapel Hill before starting on-site in Butner.

The program runs May 24–July 31, 2027, with day/night rotations and a 36-hour work week. Candidates must be enrolled in a nursing program and hold a high school diploma or GED; BLS

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy this requirement.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months time from the start of student nurse externship.

Responsibilities

• Observe and document patient information and report changes to RN or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide direct patient care activities such as vital signs, measurements, specimen collection, wound care, and basic nursing tasks.
• Assist with activities of daily living and daily patient care.
• Support clerical tasks and maintain unit cleanliness and supplies.
