Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for Summer 2027 in Smithfield, NC. You will work with an assigned RN to enhance foundational nursing education on the patient care team, with hands-on CNA-like tasks and real-world clinical exposure.

The role runs May/June 2027 through August 2027, up to 36 hours per week, with 8 or 12 hour shifts preferred. Strong attendance, clinical aptitude, and English fluency are required; BLS/NC CNA prerequisites apply.

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care.
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with clinical workflows.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes to the RN.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care per plan of care including vital signs, measurements, and basic procedures.
• Assist with activities of daily living and mobility as needed.
• Maintain clean work areas, restock supplies, and support unit operations.
• Reinforce patient education and assist in exams or procedures as directed.
