Job summary

UNC Health is offering a Student Nurse Extern I position in Chapel Hill for the summer term (May 24 – July 31, 2027). The extern will work under a RN partner within the Acute Burn and Wound Unit and participate in patient care activities up to the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice.

The role emphasizes learning and application of nursing concepts in a hospital/clinic setting, with supervision, safety, and patient-centered care as core priorities. Training and direct RN mentorship are provided.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy this requirement.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from start of student nurse externship.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provides direct and indirect patient care including vital signs, wound care, assistive activities of daily living, and range of motion exercises.
• Supports providers during examinations and procedures and helps with equipment and supplies during emergencies.
• Supports learning experiences under supervision of a registered nurse and Educational Leader.
