Job summary

Tyler Junior College is seeking a Student Assistant to support the department and college mission. The SA covers the front desk, answers questions, handles messages, and assists with basic office tasks to keep workflows organized.

Work up to 18 hours per week in a part-time role, with potential evenings and occasional weekends. Undergraduates enrolled and eligible for Federal Work Study may qualify; travel is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides coverage of the front desk and phones and greets all callers and visitors in a courteous, polite and professional manner
  • Answers basic questions and/or refers callers or visitors to the appropriate point of contact or resource
  • Takes accurate messages as needed
  • Responds to work-related emails and may assist with replying to department email accounts, if assigned by the supervisor
  • Coordinates the reception/desk area and maintains orderliness of all associated spaces
  • Opens and distributes mail to the appropriate employees
  • Assists with outgoing mail (folds letters and envelopes, prepares labels, etc.)
  • Performs hand-deliveries to other campus offices
  • Assists with basic office administration and other work as needed
  • Keeps file rooms and supply rooms organized
  • Assists with performance set-up and tear-down of recruitment materials and stage, room requirements
  • Monitoring recording equipment maintenance, setup, tear down, and operation during performances
  • Assists with publicity and recruitment events as needed
  • Assists music faculty with prioritized music copying, sorting, and filing, and music library maintenance
  • Assists music faculty with music equipment storage and inventory as needed

Job description

A Student Assistant (SA) at TJC plays an important role in promoting the mission of the department/office and college. The SA is required to perform various clerical tasks that aid in maintaining an organized workflow of the department/office.

This is a part-time position and can work up to 18 hours per week.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provides coverage of the front desk and phones and greets all callers and visitors in a courteous, polite and professional manner
  • Answers basic questions and/or refers callers or visitors to the appropriate point of contact or resource
  • Takes accurate messages as needed
  • Responds to work-related emails and may assist with replying to department email accounts, if assigned by the supervisor
  • Coordinates the reception/desk area and maintains orderliness of all associated spaces

  • Assists with basic office administration and other work as needed: this may include maintaining spreadsheets; preparing reports; coordinating/gathering data; filing, copying, or scanning documents, etc.
  • Keeps file rooms and supply rooms organized
Department/Office Specific Responsibilities

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Work Environment

Indoor concert hall with occasional office setting. Regular work required outside of normal business hours, including evenings and occasional weekends.

Physical Demands

Sitting, walking, standing, bending, prolonged communication, and regular stair climbing. Lifting and pushing 50 lbs.

Travel Required

Yes10% (Pick up supplies around Tyler, shopping at Sam's/Walmart, Tatum instrument store)

If travel is required, the candidate must have and maintain a current, valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

Students must be registered for undergraduate classes and maintain enrollment status to work in these positions. Students may qualify for Federal Work Study, which will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid.

Additional Job-Specific Requirements

Students are allowed to work a maximum of eighteen (18) hours per week and cannot work in multiple hourly positions. A work week is Monday-Sunday.
