Job description

Gain hands-on experience supporting the DIR Creative Team with visual design that supports both digital and print projects. This part-time, temporary student role in Sacramento, CA is a great fit for graphic design students who want to practice production workflows, collaborate on campaign concepts, and build work that reflects branding, accessibility expectations, and clear deadlines.

What you’ll do

• Create graphics for print and digital media such as flyers, posters, social media posts, and infographics, with a focus on Adobe InDesign.
• Support the creation and editing of content for digital platforms while ensuring alignment with branding and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliancy.
• Collaborate with the team to brainstorm and develop creative concepts for campaign and informational materials.
• Review briefs, requirements, and feedback, then prioritize tasks to meet project deadlines.
• Conduct research and perform data entry for campaigns and project collateral.
• Assist with document formatting and accessibility compliance using accessibility standards and tools.
• Help manage project timelines and maintain communication using Asana and ServiceNow.
• Monitor an external branding email for incoming requests.
• Participate in design reviews, incorporate feedback, and help improve deliverable quality.
• Keep files organized and properly archived after completion, ensuring accurate exports for both print and digital use within SharePoint.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager.

What you bring

• Proof of application for, or enrollment as a student in, an appropriate college or university program (undergraduate or graduate). For graduate students, registration as a graduate student in a recognized program is required.
• If appointed during summer months, evidence of eligibility for the following enrollment period.
• For certain curricula, proof of application for, or enrollment in, a college curriculum preparing for upper division status in an engineering, architectural, or landscape architectural curriculum leading to a bachelor’s or advanced degree.
• Submission of a portfolio or graphic design samples.
• Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Office.
• Experience producing a variety of graphic design projects and publications with a strong creative portfolio.
• Knowledge of typography, layout, color theory, image resolution, and accessibility standards.
• Ability to create designs while following branding and department guidelines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for independent and collaborative work.
• Detail-oriented, organized, innovative approach with strong problem-solving skills.
• Familiarity with ServiceNow, SharePoint, Asana, and other project management tools.

Role details

• Location: Sacramento, CA (onsite)
• Pay: $18.27 - $33.52 per hour
• Job type: part time, temporary, non-benefited student position
• Schedule: Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM; final schedule set by the supervisor
• Typical hours: up to 24 hours per week during the academic year; up to 40 hours per week during breaks (winter, spring, summer)

Eligibility and prerequisites

• Must be a student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring, and Winter, if applicable) at an accredited college or university on the affiliation list (see: http://www.calinterns.org/wp-content/uploads/Affiliation_List.pdf).
• Enrollment minimums: at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
• Declared major must match: Graphic Design, Multimedia Studies, or Web Design.

Physical requirements and working conditions

• Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication.
