Job summary

HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding seeks skilled welders to join the X18 WELDERS team. You will train at the shipyard welding school and perform structural and pipe welds on aircraft carriers and submarines using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW.

Candidates must have a Welding certificate/diploma, be able to read measurements, pass background and drug screening, and meet physical agility requirements. Overtime, outdoor work, and high safety standards are part of the role.

Qualifications

• Must have a Welding certificate or diploma from a recognized program.
• Ability to read measurements or willingness to learn.
• Must pass a background check and drug screen.
• Must pass a physical agility test.
• Able to lift at least 40 pounds and work overhead.
• Willingness to work overtime and outdoors year-round.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural and/or pipe welds on ship components using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW and GTAW.
• Weld in multiple positions on steel foundations and joints in production on ships.
• Meet nondestructive testing requirements (visual, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, radiographic).
• Receive training including certified visual inspection and related welding training.
