Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is seeking a Welder for our ship construction teams. You will be trained through our welding school and perform structural and/or pipe welds using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW on steel foundations and joints.

Responsibilities include completing visual and nondestructive tests, undergoing additional training, and meeting all safety and certification requirements. This role supports production for U.S. Navy ships at our Newport News facility.

Qualifications

• Certificate or diploma in Welding or a directly related field is required.
• Must be able to take measurements or learn.
• Background investigation and drug screen required.
• Able to pass a physical agility test.
• Able to lift at least 40 pounds and perform overhead work.
• Able to work overtime as needed.
• Must be clean shaven to wear a respirator.
• Able to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Perform tack, fillet, and full penetration welds on steel foundations and structural joints.
• Use SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW welding processes in all positions.
• Work in production on aircraft carriers and submarines with manual and mechanized welding.
• Complete nondestructive tests as specified (visual, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, radiographic).
