General Purpose:
Responsible for accurately costing all structural steel work associated with construction or fabrication projects. Lead and compile estimates that are primarily structural in scope but may involve other disciplines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Experienced and competent in accomplishing structural estimating functions as identified below:

  1. Understand and process Request for Proposal (RFP) information for discipline specific work. Work with an estimating schedule on large estimates to ensure responsibilities and date specific items are met.
  2. Utilize codes, specifications, 3D models, isometric drawings, orthographic plans / sections, and bill-of-materials to perform detailed on-screen “material-take-off” (MTO) utilizing estimating software or utilizing conventional MTO means as dictated by project specifics and/or the sophistication of drawings provided.
  3. Prepare complete labor and material cost estimates using MTO information and field labor units from experience and company resources as project specifics dictate.
  4. Analyze project documentation and distribution of requirements to supporting company areas.
  5. Attend Pre bid site walks (if required), to review location of erection, laydown, potential interferences and other site logistical challenges.
  6. Write and issue job walk notes to estimating team, estimating management, and other divisions that will be supporting the estimate pricing and project execution.
  7. Determine the local union area of project and assist in determining manpower needs.
  8. Review project information with estimating and operations management for the identification of potential safety concerns, logistical information obtained at the site walk. Develop preliminary fabrication and erection strategy / sequencing plan.
  9. Identify erection equipment required to support the handling and installation of materials.
  10. Identify quantities, assemble scope, and specific project documents and issue bid packages for pricing associated with the materials, subcontractor and equipment requirements.
  11. Perform evaluations of material, equipment and subcontractor pricing information.
  12. Perform execution planning for project erection.
  13. Assist Project Controls with the identification of work activities, erection sequencing, installation hours, and durations to generate project schedules.
  14. Assist fabrication managers with identification of project requirements and sequencing required for erection.
  15. Prepare proposal letter with clarifications, scope, and exclusions.
  16. Prepare breakdowns required for bid forms issued with bidding documents.
  17. Set up budgets for turnover to construction team.
  18. Participate in turnover of project meetings with construction team, review of estimate and project execution.
  19. Assist site management teams with review of IFC changes, as assistance is needed due to workload.
  20. Follow up with clients after submission of proposal.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned by the Estimating Manager.

Qualifications:
  1. Field and/or project experience in structural construction.
    • Bachelor's degree (BS) in Engineering or Science from four-year College/University or two-year Associate Degree in Technical Field in combination with relevant field/construction site experience can be sufficient in meeting this requirement.
  2. 4+ years minimum of estimating experience, preferably structural.
  3. Understanding of AISC codes, OSHA standards and specifications.
  4. Understand member loading, basic rigging and crane equipment.
  5. Ability to read and understand engineering documentation.
  6. Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions.
  7. Ability to produce neat and accurate work product.
  8. Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills with all levels in the company.
  9. Ability to attain and promote good customer relationships (both internal and external).
  10. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  11. Sound computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
  12. Ideally this position will report to our McMurray office. Beaver Falls and Warrendale offices are potential possibilities.
