Job summary

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) invites motivated students for a 2027 Summer internship in Chicago, IL. You will work beside industry experts to gain hands-on experience, applying classroom knowledge to real-world challenges in structural engineering and materials science.

You’ll contribute to construction monitoring, site inspections, and technical report preparation while developing professional skills in a supportive, collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Interest in civil/structural engineering, materials science, architecture, and architectural engineering.
• Maintaining high grades and eagerness to learn through hands-on consulting experience.
• Strong communication abilities and professional conduct are required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with construction monitoring, field investigations, and site inspections.
• Analyze materials, develop test protocols, and analyze test data.
• Collaborate with SGH engineers on reconnaissance of existing structures and field tests.
• Organize field data and assist with research to support analysis and repair design.
• Perform analysis using hand calculations and software under licensed supervision.
• Assist in preparing client deliverables, including drawings and reports.
• Travel and working from heights may be required.
