Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers is seeking a Civil Engineer to design and detail structures and bridges for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects. You will check statically determinate and indeterminate structures to meet alignment, strength and economic requirements, using AASHTO specs to prepare plans.

Qualifications

• Ability to draw rational conclusions and develop solutions from analysis; make independent decisions; and manage multiple assignments.
• Ability to estimate quantities and costs of materials.
• Ability to interpret construction plans and design specifications.
• Ability to produce structural design plans and notes.
• Ability to review and administer consultant design contracts.
• Experience applying civil engineering principles related to structural engineering (strength of materials, statics, structural analysis).
• Experience applying AASHTO and LRFD design standards.

Responsibilities

• Analyze engineering data and prepare clear reports and recommendations.
• Communicate effectively with VDOT staff, local government staff, contractors, and the public.
