Job summary

United Launch Alliance (ULA) is seeking a Strength Analyst to join the Advanced Programs (AP) team in Denver. You will develop and evaluate structural systems for future enhancements to Vulcan-Centaur and other launch vehicles, supporting designs and analysis from concept through reviews.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and 4+ years of related experience with structural analysis tools, across cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related technical field from an accredited college or university.
• Experience or familiarity with the following tools/software.
• NASTRAN (Static, Modal, Dynamic and Non-Linear Analysis Solutions)
• FEMAP pre/post processor
• NX CAD/Simulation
• NASGRO fracture mechanics tool
• Unix/Linux mainframe based analysis tools
• MathCad
• ABAQUS
• Matlab
• MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Ability to make design recommendations based on analysis results/experience
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment are essential
• General understanding of materials and material properties
• Experience with Structural Analysis (Tanks, Adapters, Brackets)
• Experience analyzing propulsion hardware (tubing, ducting, flex joints)
• Experience working with cross-functional teams
• Experience working with component suppliers and development of spec requirements
• Understanding of fatigue/fracture analysis tools and methodology
• Understanding of bolted joint modeling and analysis
• Understanding of GD&T standards and principles
• Understanding of analysis best practices and underlying assumptions
• Understanding of basic hand calculations

Responsibilities

• Performing strength, fatigue and fracture analysis of structural components, including non-linear analysis.
• Create analysis models, perform hand calculations and have an understanding of analysis best practices to provide strength inputs and recommendations for new design concepts.
• Review and approve 3-D engineering layouts, 3-D models, designs / drawings and 2-D drawing changes for a variety of propulsion, fluid system and mechanical system components.
• Make engineering design recommendations with consideration of thermal, mechanical and pressure loading using appropriate material properties, configurations, safety factors, etc.
• Document analysis results in strength reports.
• Support internal peer reviews, table top reviews and formal design reviews as needed.
• Support fast paced design/analysis cycles and be able to evaluate hardware non-conformances to support production activities.
• Work independently and coordinate efforts across functional and product teams.
