Job summary

United Launch Alliance (ULA) in Decatur, Alabama is seeking an engineer to perform strength, fatigue and fracture analysis on propulsion and structural components. You will build analysis models, run hand calculations, and review 3-D layouts and drawings to influence new designs.

The role emphasizes thermomechanical loading, material properties and proper design recommendations, with documentation in formal strength reports and participation in design reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 2 years of related work experience.
  • Ability to make design recommendations based on analysis results/experience.
  • Proficiency with MS Office tools.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment are essential.
  • General understanding of materials and material properties.
  • Experience with Structural Analysis (tanks, adapters, brackets).
  • Experience analyzing propulsion hardware (tubing, ducting, flex joints).
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Understanding of fatigue/fracture analysis tools and methodology.

Responsibilities

  • Performing strength, fatigue and fracture analysis of propulsion and structural components, including non-linear analysis for the Recurring Structural Analysis Team.
  • Candidate will be required to create analysis models, perform hand calculations and have an understanding of analysis best practices to provide strength inputs and recommendations for new designs and installations.
  • Candidate will be required to review and approve 3-D engineering layouts, 3-D models, designs / drawings and 2-D drawing changes for a variety of propulsion, fluid system and mechanical system components.
  • Candidate will make engineering design recommendations with consideration of thermal, mechanical and pressure loading using appropriate material properties, configurations, safety factors, etc.
  • Analysis results will be documented in strength reports.
  • Candidate will support internal peer reviews, table top reviews and formal design reviews as needed.
  • Will also need to support fast paced design/analysis cycles and be able to evaluate hardware non-conformances to support production activities.
  • The engineer must be able to work with a minimal level of mentor oversight.
