Job summary

CASA in the Raleigh–Durham area seeks an Accounting Controller to lead all accounting operations, ensuring GAAP compliance for nonprofit and real estate accounting, and to provide timely financial reporting to leadership, funders, and the Board.

This hands-on leadership role oversees GL, budgeting, real estate and LIHTC/HUD projects, grant accounting, audits, and a finance team, with emphasis on internal controls and process improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
• Active CPA license a plus, or candidate actively pursuing a CPA license.
• 5–7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
• 2–3 years in a supervisory or management role overseeing accounting staff.
• Demonstrated nonprofit accounting and fund accounting experience.
• Solid knowledge of GAAP as applied to nonprofit organizations (ASC 958).
• Experience with real estate accounting (depreciation, lease accounting ASC 842, CIP).
• Proficiency with NetSuite or comparable platforms; advanced Excel skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee general ledger and GAAP-compliant financial reporting for leadership, funders, and the Board.
• Lead annual budgeting and monitor variances; develop cash flow projections.
• Oversee real estate accounting, LIHTC/HUD programs, and capital projects.
• Manage restricted and unrestricted grant accounting and audits coordination.
• Ensure internal controls and process improvements across finance operations.
• Oversee AP/AR, payroll, reconciliations, and banking activities.
• Supervise accounting staff and optimize financial systems and automation.
