Job summary

CFS is seeking a strategic Chief Financial Officer for a respected Baltimore nonprofit. The role oversees financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, cash management, audits, and board reporting, with a focus on fiscal sponsorship and future 501(c)(3) formation.

The ideal candidate has extensive nonprofit financial leadership experience, including managing fiscal sponsorships or forming new entities, and will partner with leaders to guide growth and sustainability.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
• Significant nonprofit accounting and financial leadership experience.
• Prior experience with fiscal sponsorship arrangements.
• Experience transitioning organizations out of fiscal sponsorship structures, or establishing a new 501(c)(3) organization from the ground up.
• Strong knowledge of nonprofit financial reporting, grant compliance, and fund accounting.
• Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership and boards.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead all financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting activities.
• Provide strategic financial guidance to the Executive Leadership Team and Board.
• Oversee monthly and annual financial close processes.
• Manage audit, tax filings, and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Develop and maintain internal controls, policies, and financial procedures.
• Monitor organizational cash flow and long-term financial sustainability.
• Support grant budgeting, reporting, and funder compliance.
• Partner with program and operational leaders on financial decision-making.
• Lead financial aspects of fiscal sponsorship arrangements.
• Advise on nonprofit entity formation, governance, and financial infrastructure development.
• Support organizations transitioning from fiscal sponsorship models to independent 501(c)(3) status.
• Serve as a thought partner on organizational growth, strategic initiatives, and operational improvements.
