Job summary

Grand Traverse County is seeking a Human Resources Director to provide strategic leadership and oversight of HR programs for about 550 employees across 35 departments. You will advise the County Administrator and elected officials on workforce matters and lead labor relations and negotiations.

The role oversees recruitment, compensation, benefits, performance management, compliance, and employee development, with potential evening meetings and travel between county locations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in human resources management or related field.
• Master’s degree preferred for advanced leadership roles.
• PHR/SPHR desirable (certifications).

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and oversight of HR programs for ~550 employees across 35 departments.
• Advise County leadership on workforce matters and labor relations.
• Oversee recruitment, compensation, benefits, performance management, and compliance.
• Direct or support employee development, safety, and HR information systems.
• Represent the County in collective bargaining and employment proceedings.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in HR management / labor relations / business or public administration

Master’s degree preferred
