Job summary

Sustainable Montana is seeking an Executive Director to serve as the organization’s first employee, working part-time with remote flexibility. The role centers on fundraising, grant writing, donor cultivation, and program development, with board reporting and community engagement at the core.

The successful candidate will lead financial stewardship, manage operations, and build partnerships across Montana while guiding growth toward a sustainable future for our community.

Qualifications

• Must reside in Montana.
• Fundraising experience with grants, campaigns, or donor relations.
• Genuine passion for sustainability, food security, community resilience.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and self-manage time with minimal supervision.
• Experience building relationships with community members, partners, or stakeholders.
• Willingness to travel within Montana.
• Experience recruiting or coordinating volunteers.
• Experience planning and executing events, including logistics.
• Familiarity with managing expenses and reporting.

Responsibilities

• Lead grant research and writing; manage donor cultivation and reports.
• Build and maintain donor pipeline including individuals, businesses, and supporters.
• Plan annual fundraising campaigns and revenue-generating programs.
• Assist in developing and monitoring the annual budget with Treasurer and Board.
• Maintain financial records and report updates to the Board.
• Oversee day-to-day nonprofit operations and implement strategic plans.
• Coordinate volunteer recruitment, scheduling, and events.
• Develop community outreach and communications across channels.
• Provide monthly board reports and organize event logistics.
