Job summary

Sustainable Montana is seeking an Executive Director to serve as the organization’s first employee, handling fundraising, grants, donor relations, and essential operations. The role will partner with the Board to advance program priorities and build community partnerships, with the potential to grow into a full-time position as fundraising expands.

The position is part-time (≈20 hours/week), remote but Montana-based travel is required, and compensation ranges from $30,000 to $40,000 annually

Qualifications

  • Must reside in Montana.
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience with grants, campaigns, or donor relationships.
  • Genuine passion for sustainability, food security, community resilience, or related causes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and self-manage time and priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Experience building relationships with community members, partners, or stakeholders.
  • Comfortable in a startup-style environment requiring flexibility and initiative.
  • Proficiency with email, Google Workspace or Microsoft Office, and social media platforms.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of board deliberations, donor information, and financial records.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within Montana as needed.
  • Experience recruiting, coordinating, or managing volunteers.
  • Experience planning and executing events, including logistics and day-of coordination.
  • Ability to responsibly manage an expense account with accurate reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Lead grant research, writing, and submission aligned with Sustainable Montana’s mission.
  • Maintain grant calendars, deadlines, reporting requirements, and supporting docs.
  • Build and manage a donor pipeline including individuals, businesses, and supporters.
  • Lead donor cultivation, stewardship, acknowledgments, and impact reporting.
  • Plan and execute annual fundraising campaigns and special appeals.
  • Support revenue-generating activities including Montana license plate program and online sales.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring the annual budget with Treasurer and Board.
  • Maintain financial records and provide regular updates to the Board.
  • Manage organizational expense accounts with accurate tracking and reporting.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and report to the Board.
