Summary

Assist nursing staff in maintaining the surgery schedule by promptly and thoroughly decontaminating O.R. instruments, equipment, and scopes. Ensure an orderly flow of decontamination, lubrication, packaging, and sterilization or disinfection processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: Minimum six months experience in a Surgery Center or Operating Room environment. Knowledge of autoclaving procedures required.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations: CRCST Certification from a recognized accredited program and/or Surgical Instrument Technician Certification from a recognized accredited program required.

Essential Functions

These are the critical tasks, duties, and responsibilities for accomplishing the job's purpose and objectives. They are fundamental to job performance. Other duties may be assigned, deleted, or changed at management's discretion.

  1. Receive surgical supplies and instruments after each surgical case. Clean thoroughly, including canal joints, etc., using universal precautions as per OSHA standards. Assemble trays accurately and efficiently.
  2. Operate and understand safety features of E.O. and Steam sterilization processes. Know the difference between terminal and flash sterilization and identify heat-sensitive equipment.
  3. Maintain weekly logs of biological incubated tests.
  4. Use indicators for exposure and properly package materials according to manufacturer instructions.
  5. Keep the work area clean and organized following safety protocols.
  6. Store scrub suits and jackets properly in the lounge. Clean autoclave and perform other duties to ensure smooth, safe, and efficient department operations per AORN standards.
  7. Notify purchasing when supplies are needed.
  8. Report equipment malfunctions immediately to the coordinator.
  9. Be ambulatory to facilitate efficient processing of equipment.
  10. Attend seminars on GI procedures, equipment, and maintenance if necessary.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by the charge nurse.
