Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee - Satellite Pharmacy, 100% Overnights

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician, certified or trainee to work in our Acute Care, Satellite Pharmacy. This position operates under general pharmacist supervision, coordinating and performing technical activities in dispensing areas. Under the supervision of the technician supervisor, the role supports development, coordination, and training of assigned areas, with functional supervision as needed. The shift hours are from 11:00 pm to 7:30 am, Sunday through Thursday.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Care intends to hire either the Pharmacy Technician, Trainee classification, or Pharmacy Technician, Certified, depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please specify in your application which position you are applying for or both.

Responsibilities include:
  • Managing inventory in satellites and dispensing areas, including emergency drug supplies
  • Reviewing medication inventory for expired medications
  • Maintaining medication inventory levels according to established par levels
  • Managing inpatient Epic In-Baskets: printing labels, preparing doses, packaging, labeling, documenting activities, and managing discharge patient lists
  • Delivering medications to patient care areas and returning unused medications
  • Ensuring medication security in patient care unit medication rooms, including proper storage and security of controlled substances
  • Maintaining accurate controls and security for controlled substances, including inventory records
  • Generating, reviewing, and maintaining records related to medication distribution and dispensing (Forms 127P, 131)
  • Using equipment such as laminar flow hoods, label printers, packaging and compounding tools, pneumatic tube systems, AcuDose Medstations, RemStar, and Med Carousel
  • Maintaining cleanliness of BSCs and equipment per policies
  • Completing quality assurance and control records for sterile compounding
  • Maintaining competencies in sterile product preparation and aseptic techniques
  • Compounding sterile and non-sterile products, including hazardous medications
  • Conducting and documenting monthly inspections of patient care areas
  • Training pharmacy students and new technicians; providing functional supervision
  • Handling narcotics and controlled substances inventories and documentation
  • Refilling AcuDose Medstations following proper procedures
  • Assisting pharmacists with medication inspections on patient care units
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
For Trainee Technician:
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire
  • Must become certified within one year
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of post-high school experience/education in sciences or completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program
For Certified Technician:
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire
  • National certification through PTCB or NHA, with ongoing education requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of post-high school experience/education or completion of an accredited program
Additional Qualifications:

Ability to calculate ratios & proportions for pharmaceutical needs, demonstrated by a work sample.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with inventory maintenance, team environments, detail-oriented work, Windows-based programs, and healthcare settings involving patient interaction. A Silver Level National Career Readiness Certificate is preferred.
