Job description

Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee - Satellite Pharmacy, 100% PM

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician, certified or trainee to work in our Acute Care, Satellite Pharmacy. This position operates under the supervision of a pharmacist, coordinating and performing technical activities in dispensing areas. It supports development, coordination, and training of assigned areas, with functional supervision as needed. The work involves 8-hour rotating shifts between 2:00 pm and 11:30 pm.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Care intends to hire either the Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Certified based on the candidate's qualifications. Please specify your preferred position in your application or indicate both.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Managing inventory in satellite and dispensing areas, including emergency drug supplies.
  2. Reviewing medication inventory for expired drugs.
  3. Maintaining medication inventory levels according to established par levels.
  4. Managing inpatient Epic In-Baskets, including printing labels, preparing medications, and documenting activities.
  5. Delivering medications to patient care areas and returning unused medications.
  6. Ensuring medication security in patient care unit medication rooms, including proper storage and controlled substances security.
  7. Maintaining controls and security for controlled substances, including inventory records.
  8. Generating and reviewing records related to medication distribution and dispensing.
  9. Using equipment such as laminar flow hoods, label printers, automated dispensing systems, and others.
  10. Maintaining cleanliness of BSC, equipment, and clean room per policies.
  11. Completing quality assurance and control records, including sterile compounding procedures.
  12. Maintaining sterile product preparation competencies and aseptic techniques.
  13. Compounding sterile and non-sterile products, including hazardous medications.
  14. Conducting monthly inspections of patient care areas.
  15. Training pharmacy students and new technicians, potentially serving as a functional supervisor.
  16. Managing activities involving narcotics and controlled substances, including inventories and documentation.
  17. Refilling AcuDose Medstations following proper procedures.
  18. Assisting pharmacists with medication inspections on patient care units.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
For Trainee Technician:
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire.
  • Must become certified within one year.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience or education in natural sciences or completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.
For Certified Technician:
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire.
  • Certified through PTCB or NHA, with ongoing education compliance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience or education as above.
Additional Qualifications:

Ability to perform ratio and proportion calculations, inventory maintenance, and work accurately in healthcare settings. Preferred: National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level.
