Job description

Pharmacy Technician, Certified or Trainee - Satellite Pharmacy, 100% AM

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician, certified or trainee to work in our Acute Care, Satellite Pharmacy. This position operates under general pharmacist supervision, coordinating and performing technical activities in dispensing areas. Under the supervision of the technician supervisor, it supports development, coordination, and training within the assigned areas. The role involves providing functional supervision as needed. The position works 8-hour rotating shifts between 6:00 am and 3:30 pm.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Care intends to hire either the Pharmacy Technician, Trainee classification, or Pharmacy Technician, Certified, depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please specify in your application which position you are applying for, or both.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Managing inventory in satellite and dispensing areas, including emergency drug supplies.
  2. Reviewing medication inventory for expired medications.
  3. Maintaining medication inventory levels according to established par levels.
  4. Managing inpatient Epic In-Baskets, including printing labels, preparing medications, documenting activities, and managing patient discharge medication lists.
  5. Delivering medications to patient care areas and returning unused medications.
  6. Ensuring medication security, including proper storage, locking controlled substances, and maintaining security protocols.
  7. Maintaining accurate controls and records for controlled substances, including inventory documentation.
  8. Generating and reviewing records related to medication distribution and dispensing (Forms 127P, 131).
  9. Utilizing equipment such as laminar flow hoods, label printers, automated dispensing systems, and others.
  10. Maintaining cleanliness and sterile compounding areas, adhering to quality assurance protocols.
  11. Compounding sterile and non-sterile products, including hazardous medications, following aseptic techniques.
  12. Conducting monthly inspections of patient care areas.
  13. Assisting with training of pharmacy students and new technicians, potentially providing functional supervision.
  14. Managing activities involving narcotics and controlled substances, including inventory and documentation.
  15. Refilling automated Medstations following proper procedures.
  16. Assisting pharmacists with medication inspections on patient care units.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
For Trainee Technician:
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire.
  • Must become certified within one year.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience or education in natural sciences, or completion of an accredited training program.
For Certified Technician:
  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at hire.
  • Certified through PTCB or NHA, with ongoing certification maintenance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience or education as above.
Additional Qualifications:

Ability to perform ratio and proportion calculations, inventory management, and work accurately in healthcare settings, with knowledge of computer programs. Preferred: National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver level.
